About Me
It all started with an idea (that old chestnut). What if there was a woman highway robber? And I built a story around that idea. I just wrote it. I didn't plan it.
I love history. I love 'why not’ and 'what if'. I love writing, so I put them all together.
A few years back I wrote a script called Soiled Dove set in the Wild West of America in the 19th century. I wrote it from the perspective of a young girl. All the movies, stories and books that I loved and grew up with, only really told the men's stories and I wondered what were the women's? So I started researching. And through my hefty research for the nitty-gritty details of the everyday life of a woman at that time, a woman trying to survive, I found not that much. It was all a bit minimal and in the shadows. Nothing loud and proud. I did find one line that stood out. One line that stayed with me for years…
“She was delivering the mail on horseback dressed in men's deerskin.”
It was so casually written but to me it was enormous. Worthy of detailed pages. Worthy of a book, a statue even. But no it was just one line in a document about somebody else far more important.
This line not only inspired me, it piqued my curiosity, my 'what if' and 'why not'. I wondered who the hell that woman was. What was she like? How did she get there? What was her story? I will never know (boohoo about that, my superpower would be to go back in time to meet her). So I made up my own story about another woman dressed in man's clothes. There were probably a lot more renegade, outlaw, rebellious women out there that history hasn't documented but we will never know that, their stories are lost to time.
So fast forward a few years and after having had my second child, a daughter, I wrote The Highwaygirl.
A little bit more about me....
A little bit more about me… I grew up in a show-business family in London. I started my career as a ballet dancer but injury after injury foiled my dreams of a long career. I have been writing for years. I started with lyrics for my then-punk/rock band. I wrote poetry, lots and lots of poetry. I performed my poetry in London at events for Spoken Word. (I continue writing poetry, every day I write a poem or two. A poem a day keeps the doctor away.) We moved from London to Barcelona when my first son was born, which is when I started writing children's books, lots and lots of children's books. Then I wrote a script, Soiled Dove. Then quite a few years later I wrote The Highwaygirl.
My latest children's book was written whilst I was writing The Highwaygirl. It is called Mummy Mermaid. I have lots of sequels and series and spin-offs in the making, just waiting for the pen to touch the paper.
I live in Barcelona with my husband Luc, son Leo Billy and daughter Amy-Sunrise where I/we ride horses, surf, play and sing in our rock/bluegrass band.
